Have you recently started noticing small bumps that look like acne on your scalp or along your hairline? You might be suffering from an ailment called folliculitis. It is common, but it can mess with your style.

Fear not. There are remedies. The best shampoo for folliculitis can help clear things up and provide some much-needed relief. We’ve got a few contenders on our list and have something for everyone.

Let’s dive in.

In this article, we are going to review the following folliculitis shampoos

What is Folliculitis of the Scalp?

When your hair follicles on your head become inflamed and infected, the result is folliculitis of the scalp. Folliculitis of the scalp is a common condition affecting people of all ages. However, it is more common in people with curly or coarse hair.

The source of infection in the follicles can be either fungal or bacterial, depending on the type of folliculitis you have. You can also get this condition from your barbershop if they do not adequately clean their clippers or other equipment.

How to Choose the Best Shampoo for Folliculitis

When choosing a product to control folliculitis, it is crucial to choose one that has some antimicrobial properties or a medicated shampoo. You need something that is going to calm the inflammation and treat the infection.

Products that use anti-bacterial ingredients like ketoconazole, tea tree oil, coconut oil, apple cider vinegar, and rosemary oil are good options. It is also important to use something that is not to harsh on your hair follicles and something that agrees with your skin personally.

You also want something that cleans any residue in the follicle, and that washes clean, so there is no build-up. And, of course, you want something that smells nice and makes your hair feel good.

What is the Best Way to Use a Shampoo for Folliculitis?

Merely using a shampoo for folliculitis is not enough. You need to know the proper way to use it, so you see the maximum benefits without damaging your scalp or hair.

How Often to Wash Your Hair

You have probably been warned not to wash your hair too much, because it can dry and break your hair. Over-washing can indeed cause dryness and damage, but when you have folliculitis, you need to find a happy balance. So, while you have an outbreak, you probably need to wash more frequently.

Every couple of days is good. You also need to wash your hair when you have laid your head on anything that might contaminate your scalp with germs and after you get a haircut.

If you have problems with dry hair or breakage, you can shampoo your scalp several times every week without washing the length of your hair.

How to Wash Your Hair

When using a specialized shampoo on your hair, you want to work it into your scalp, but do not use your nails. Keep in mind that many shampoos for this condition do not contain sulfides. That is a good thing, but it also means these shampoos will not lather as much as products that contain sulfides.

Make sure to wash your scalp thoroughly, but as previously mentioned, you do not have to clean the ends every time. After working the product into your scalp, rinse your hair thoroughly to make sure you leave no residue.

Always use lukewarm water when washing your hair. Then after you rinse, it run colder water through your hair to close the follicles.

After Washing Your Hair

One of the most important things to do after you wash your hair is to make sure your hair is completely dry before you go to sleep or cover your head with anything. Covering wet hair helps to harbor fungus and bacteria on your scalp.

If you usually use styling products or oils, try to use them on the ends of your hair and not your scalp. These products often clog the follicles or spread the infection to other areas. If you have to use oils on your scalp to prevent it from drying, use natural oils like coconut or neem oil.

Advantages of Using a Shampoo for Folliculitis

Using a shampoo that made for treating folliculitis is an excellent way to manage the problem and quickly get it under control. You are already shampooing your hair, so you do not have to add an extra step in your hair care routine. Plus, these shampoos can also help with hair growth and maintaining healthy hair.

Unlike topical creams or other treatments, shampoo cleans the scalp helping to get to the source of the problem. Many products claim to help treat folliculitis, but if you are not cleaning the affected area, they may just spread the condition to other parts of your head or body.

Precautions for Using Folliculitis Shampoo

As you know, folliculitis is an infection of inflamed hair follicles. There are different causes of this irritation, though. Either a bacterial or fungal infection usually causes this condition. So, using a shampoo for folliculitis should be part of an overall maintenance program to prevent reoccurring infections.

In addition to using a high-quality shampoo, you should make sure you clean all of your brushes, combs, caps, pillowcases, and anything else that comes in contact with your head.

You also need to make sure you do not have an allergy to any of the ingredients in the shampoo, as that can make the problem worse. Like all skin conditions, if you do not see improvement after using a product, or if the problem gets worse, you should see a specialist. So, you can make sure the problem gets correctly diagnosed.

WOW Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoo is one of my favorite shampoos for removing build-up and treating any scalp issues I have. I used this product after about a week of using products in my hair, and it was able to remove the products and leave my hair feeling clean.

As a black man with coarse, curly hair, I find that some products do not rinse out of my hair quickly, but that is not the case with this shampoo.

It is a natural shampoo, and it features organic ingredients, which I like because you do not have to worry about this shampoo having harsh chemicals that can irritate your scalp. When you use it, your scalp feels clear and like it can breathe.

Also, this shampoo contains dihydrotestosterone, also known as DHT, blocker, which helps to prevent hair loss. As a man who is very conscious of my look, I want to make sure to avoid any hair loss. So, I like that this product does that. I did notice after using this product that I did feel like it was helping my hair to grow and even clearing some of the scalp issues I have.

The only thing I did not like about this shampoo was the fact that it left my hair pretty dry. I had to use a conditioner with this shampoo because it was too drying.

Pros

  • It is an all-natural product with no harsh chemicals.
  • It contains a DHT blocker to prevent hair loss.
  • This shampoo leaves your hair feeling clean, and it removes build-up.
  • It comes in a large bottle.

Cons

  • It leaves hair dry if you use it several times a week.
  • You need a conditioner in addition to the shampoo.
  • It is a bit pricey.

PURA D’OR Gold Label

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B00FH692PQ&Format= SL250 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=shaveandgroom 20&language=en US

I used the PURA D’OR Gold Label exclusively for a few months to test the product. It has an overpowering smell due to the high concentration of herbal ingredients. However, the scent is not offensive or overly feminine, and overall it smells pretty fresh.

This shampoo has a total of 24 herbs and minerals and 17 DHT blockers. This product is not explicitly marketed for scalp conditions, but it contains tea tree oil to relieve scalp irritation and itchiness. It is also unique because it uses aloe juice instead of water to give your hair added moisture.

When using PURA D’OR, I applied it to my wet hair and worked it into a lather. It lathers pretty well for a plant-based formula, which I like. I then left it on for two minutes as the bottle recommends and rinsed it thoroughly with warm water. After cleaning my hair, I ran colder water through my hair and over my scalp to help close the follicles and lock in moisture.

My hair was left feeling clean, and my scalp felt fresh. I used this product several times a week, and I did not notice excessive drying of my scalp or hair during this time. I also saw a reduction in folliculitis and dandruff from this product.

Pros

  • It contains DHT blockers to reduce hair loss.
  • The all-natural formula contains ingredients that help scalp irritation.
  • The formula is not overly drying.
  • This shampoo leaves hair feeling clean and light.

Cons

  • It contains ingredients that might cause allergies.
  • It has a strong scent.
  • This product does not contain a medicated ingredient.
  • It can burn an inflamed scalp.

Healthy Hair Plus Anti-Fungal Shampoo

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B006R5GXCG&Format= SL250 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=shaveandgroom 20&language=en US

Healthy Hair Plus Anti-Fungal Shampoo is another product I tried on my quest to find the best shampoo for treating folliculitis. I immediately noticed that the product seemed more moisturizing than other products out there.

However, this product does not lather the way other shampoos do. I believe that is because it has a higher concentration of mild oils. It contains coconut, jojoba, sunflower, and emu oil. However, it does rinse clean, and it left my hair feeling moisturized without the use of conditioner.

When using this shampoo, I applied it to wet hair. I then left it on while I was taking my shower to allow the ingredients to soak into my scalp. I left it on longer than other shampoos because the formula is not as harsh, and I wanted to get the maximum benefits.

The shampoo rinsed out pretty quickly, but it took a little longer to get it all out. This shampoo is not as good at stripping out product build-up. However, after using this shampoo a couple of times a week for a few weeks, my scalp felt a lot healthier. I also noticed that my scalp was not as dry and itchy.

Another thing I like about this shampoo is the light fragrance. I do not like walking around smelling like medicated shampoo all the time.

Pros

  • Mild formula for sensitive skin.
  • Nice soft fragrance.
  • You can use this product several times a week without it drying out your hair.
  • It makes your hair feel softer and less frizzy.

Cons

  • This formula is not as good at cleaning excessive build-up.
  • It contains some chemical ingredients.
  • Not suitable for severe scalp inflammation.

I started using Puriya shampoo after a flareup that caused my scalp to be itchy and have some bumps. Due to the condition of my scalp at the time, I followed the instructions on the label carefully. It says to use the product daily until symptoms start to subside, so that is what I did.

When using this shampoo, I deeply massaged it into my scalp and left it on for a few minutes. It felt excellent on my scalp, as there was a slight tingling effect. The product also rinsed out quickly, and my scalp and hair felt clean when my hair dried.

After using the product every day for about a week, I noticed it was causing some drying to my hair. However, I did start to see some relief of my scalp issues. So, I started using it less frequently.

It took several weeks of use to see my scalp inflammation go away, but the itchiness started to go away almost immediately. I continued using the shampoo for the next two months a few times a week, and the relief continued with less drying than I noticed when I first started using the product.

Puriya Sulfate Free Tea Tree Oil Shampoo smells great, especially for a shampoo with tea tree oil as it usually overpowers the scent.

Pros

  • It comes in a large 16 oz bottle.
  • The scent is nice.
  • It has a higher concentration of tea tree oil than other products.
  • You can use it with or without a conditioner.
  • This shampoo is PH balanced.

Cons

  • The tea tree, rosemary, and sage might irritate some people.
  • It can dry hair if used frequently.
  • It burns if it gets in your eyes.

Nizoral A-D Anti-Dandruff Shampoo is a medicated shampoo used to treat scalp conditions that cause flaking and dandruff. I used it when I noticed I had flakes and more intense scalp irritation.

I like this product because it contains 1% ketoconazole, and you do not need a prescription for this product. This ingredient is an active ingredient in many prescription-strength products for scalp conditions. So, you know this stuff works.

When I used it, I washed my hair with Nizoral a few times a week. Each time I used it, I applied the shampoo and massaged it gently into my scalp as recommended on the label before thoroughly rinsing my hair with warm water.

While shampooing my hair, I noticed that the product gets a thick lather. It also washes out pretty quickly. After rinsing out my hair, it felt immaculate. My scalp also felt clean, and I did notice that my flakes were better after a few uses.

My dandruff continued to get better over the next two months, and then I was able to use a milder shampoo and continue to use this as a maintenance product every few weeks.

Pros

  • It leaves the scalp and hair clean.
  • This is an over-the-counter medicated shampoo.
  • Nizoral contains active ingredients used to treat dandruff and fungal infections.
  • It offers relief of itching.
  • It strips residue effectively.

  • It can cause hair loss.
  • Contains harsh ingredients
  • It is not for use in areas with open sores.

Maple Holistics Tea Tree Shampoo is a natural product for scalp irritation, flaking, and itchiness. So, I decide to give it a try. The shampoo has tea tree oil, lavender, B vitamins, jojoba oil, argan oil, and rosemary oil. So, I was hopeful that it would be an excellent natural solution for my scalp problems.

I started by using this product alone several times per week. I immediately noticed that it helped my scalp inflammation. When I applied it to my scalp, I could feel a refreshing feeling from the natural oils packed into the formula.

You can tell by the smell and the feel of this product that it contains a lot of essential ingredients. After only a few uses, I started to see that my scalp was a lot smoother.

The product is easy to lather and rinse. It can dry your hair slightly, but when I started noticing that my hair was getting a bit dry, I just waited an extra day before shampooing. Waiting the extra day prevented the drying, and I still enjoyed the benefits of the product.

Pros

  • This product has an effective all-natural formula.
  • It is free of sulfates, parabens, and silicone.
  • The cost is extremely reasonable.
  • It feels good on the scalp.

Cons

  • This shampoo has a strong herbal scent.
  • It can dry your hair out if you use it frequently.
  • Some people might be allergic to some of the ingredients.

ProBliva Fungus Shampoo for Hair and Scalp

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B07RZ9B33D&Format= SL250 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=shaveandgroom 20&language=en US

I tried ProBliva after experiencing an outbreak of bumps on my scalp during the summer. The condition of my scalp was pretty bad when I started using it. I started by using the product two to three times per week.

The bottle says to apply it to wet hair and leave it on for a few minutes. I followed the instructions, then thoroughly washed my hair. When I used the product and washed it out, I did not feel it immediately working on my scalp. But, after using it, my scalp did feel moisturized, and my hair felt nice.

The next time I used the product, I left it on a little longer to let the ingredients soak in before I rinsed it out. After a couple of uses, I did notice that my scalp was getting better. It took a few applications before I started seeing the improvement, though.

After using this product for a few weeks, all of the bumps from folliculitis on my head cleared.  ProBliva Fungus Shampoo was the only product I was using at the time, so I am confident that this shampoo did help.

Pros

  • The mild formula is suitable for scalp inflammation.
  • This product smells great.
  • The formula is moisturizing so that you can use it several times per week.

Cons

  • This contains some chemical ingredients.
  • The bottle does not last for a long time.
  • It is expensive considering the amount you get.

Final Thoughts

After trying all of these products, I found the Maple Holistics Tea Tree Oil Shampoo to be the most effective product I have used. I like it best because it is natural, but it works just as good as products with harsh chemicals.

It also feels good on your scalp. I love the way it feels and the fact that it provides almost instant relief from the itching caused by folliculitis. There are so many products on the market to treat this condition, but it is important to me to use something that does not overly dry and damage my hair.

The tea tree oil helps to control fungal and bacterial infections that cause folliculitis naturally. If I use it consistently, I see a significant reduction in the number of bumps I have on my scalp and the overall health of my hair. This formula is also safe to use as a regular shampoo, so I do not have to switch between shampoos frequently.

Since I started using Maple Holistics Tea Tree Oil Shampoo, I have been able to stop using other medicated shampoos with chemicals, parabens, silicone, and other ingredients that clog follicles over time. I have also gained confidence, and I am confident that you will too.
