7 Best Budget Electric Shavers in 2020

electric shaver

If you are in a hurry and just want to find out what the best budget electric shaver is, then we recommend Panasonic Arc 3 ES8103S as the best one.

Being the best looking guy in the room doesn’t mean you have to spend the most money. A good shaver is essential to keeping your facial hair well-groomed, so I’ve created this guide to help you find the best budget electric shaver for your needs without breaking the bank.

In this article, we are going to review the following Electric Shavers

Do I Need an Electric Shaver?

If you’re going to grow a beard, you need to keep up on grooming and beard maintenance. Even if you like the clean-shaven look, there’s still a good amount of grooming associated with that as well.

Some men may prefer to shave with a traditional razor, but for those of you who find that to be tedious, an electric shaver may be just what you’re looking for.

It’s a common misconception that all electric shavers are incredibly expensive. While some high-end shavers are, there are quite a few budget options if you’re not looking to spend hundreds of dollars.

Even if you’re looking for the best electric shaver, the chances are that the upfront cost of an electric shaver is going to be a little more expensive than a traditional razor that you’d buy at the grocery store.

However, if you take care of your shaver, it will last you a long time, and you may save some money if you do not have to buy razor blade refills all the time like you would for your traditional razor. In other words, although you’ll probably spend more money upfront when you buy your electric shaver, you’ll spend less in the long run.

How to Choose an Electric Shaver

If you’re reading this guide, obviously, the cost is an important factor in the decisions you make regarding grooming. As I said, you don’t need to buy the most expensive high-end shaver to look good, although you should keep other factors in mind as well.

An electric shaver won’t give you a close shave as a razor will. If that’s what you’re looking for out of a grooming product, you’ll probably want to stick with a traditional razor or a straight razor. The best electric shavers will get you a pretty close shave, but not nearly as close as if you use something with a sharp blade.

When you’re shopping for an electric razor, you’ll want to consider the following features.

  • Battery life
  • Wet vs Dry (or both)
  • Cord vs Cordless
  • How easy it is to clean
  • Price

You’ll also see the words rotary shaver or foil shaver in your search for the best budget electric shaver. It’s helpful to know the difference between the two, so you can make the right choice and feel confident in your purchase.

A rotary shaver uses blades that spin (hence the name), whereas foil shavers have blades that move back and forth and are often covered by some kind of casing, so the blades don’t make direct contact with your skin.

Some electric shavers are made with specific needs in mind, so if you have what you’re looking for in mind, you should be able to find what you’re looking for. But I’m here to review some cheap electric shavers to make your search a little bit easier.

Advantages to Using an Electric Shaver

One of the significant advantages of using an electric shaver is the convenience factor. Using an electric shaver is not nearly as involved as shaving with a traditional razor since you don’t have to use shaving cream and continuously rinse your razor.

If you dislike regular razors because you’re prone to knicking your face, an electric shaver might be the solution to your problems as well. Electric razors are overall more comfortable than razors with sharp blades and will help reduce irritation when shaving.

If you know you have sensitive skin or you’re prone to irritation when shaving, an electric shaver is a great grooming alternative.

How to Use an Electric Shaver

Like I mentioned above, one of the nice things about electric shavers is that they’re less time-consuming, and you don’t have to use shaving cream, etc. to get a good shave.

With electric razors, you just turn them on and go to work trimming your beard. Although they’re more comfortable in the long run, you might experience a less than satisfactory experience the first time using one if you’ve never used an electric shaver before.

If you do experience some razor burn or hair left behind by the electric shaver, give it some time for your skin to get adjusted. Part of getting a good shave with an electric shaver has a proper technique, and you can only get that by practicing.

Braun Series 5 5145s

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B07FJ7WPMC&Format= SL250 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=shaveandgroom 20

As far as budget electric shavers go, this Braun Series 5 shaver is on the higher end, but still not nearly as expensive as some of the other Braun models.

The Braun Series 7 shavers do give you a closer shave but come at a much higher price, so if you’re looking to save money, you can do so by going with a Series 5 if you’re okay with sacrificing a little closeness. That being said, there is not much more of a difference between the two series except the price.

The Series 5 5145s model will still give you a super comfortable shave, which is excellent if you have sensitive skin, or even if you don’t. This Braun model also comes with an auto-sensing motor to help trim dense beards.

Pros:

  • Works both wet and dry
  • The razor head is completely waterproof
  • Foil shaver flexes in 8 directions to help get a close shave on difficult areas
  • Comes with a travel case
  • The battery only takes an hour to charge fully
  • A full charge will give you 50 minutes of use

Cons:

  • Can’t use the shaver while it’s plugged in
  • A little more pricey than some other budget electric shavers
  • Razor head doesn’t do a great job of catching hair

Philips is a well-known grooming brand for men. If you have any grooming products, already there’s a good chance that they’re a Philips Norelco product. And while most of their electric shavers are on the expensive side, the 6000 model is a great budget option and has a lot of excellent features to give you a clean shave.

The three shaving heads have rotary blades that flex around the contours of your face, so you have an even lower chance of nicking your face while using it. Philips Norelco also emphasizes the “ComfortGlide” rings on the blades that protect your face even further from irritation.

  • Allows you to shave wet or dry
  • Comes with a precision trimmer
  • ComfortGlide rings on the rotary blades

  • Trimmer accessory isn’t great quality

Philips Norelco OneBlade

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B01D328BG6&Format= SL250 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=shaveandgroom 20

The Philips Norelco OneBlade may look gimmicky based on the design and the price, but it performs well; I was pleasantly surprised when I tested it out.

I have pretty sensitive skin, so I appreciate that the OneBlade electric shaver doesn’t irritate my skin easily. Other features that I like are the trimmer combs and the ability to use this electric shaver on all hair lengths. I like to switch up how my facial hair is styled, so it’s nice not to have to get more than one grooming tool to achieve the looks you want.

Another tip: if you want to save even more money, you can buy this electric shaver directly from Philips’ website and get an additional 20% off your shaver and blade refills.

Pros:

  • Super affordable price
  • Can be used as a shaver or trimmer
  • Works great on sensitive skin
  • Cartridge lasts up to 4 months

  • Plastic parts are more prone to breaking than a more expensive shaver

Braun Series 3 ProSkin

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B0115I2DRI&Format= SL250 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=shaveandgroom 20

The Braun Series 3 ProSkin is another cheap option that will give you a decent shave. This particular electric shaver is a foil shaver, which means the blades move up and down instead of in circles.

One of the problems that I had with this electric shaver is that if you’re using it for an extended period, the blades can get hot, as they do with a lot of other foil shavers. This can also get worse if you have thick, coarse facial hair, which I do, and I’m sure a lot of you do too.

So while this electric shaver is a great price and doesn’t a pretty good job, if you have thick facial hair, this may not work well for you.

Pros:

  • Can be used for wet or dry shaving
  • Cheaper than the Braun Series 5 electric shavers but performance is comparable
  • The razor head is waterproof for easy cleaning
  • Works best for medium beard growth
  • A full battery charge gives you 45 minutes of use
  • Fully charges in 1 hour or a 5-minute quick-charge
  • LED display shows you the battery level
  • Comes with a trimmer
  • The rubber handle gives you excellent control when shaving

Cons:

  • Doesn’t shave as closely as the Braun Series 7 or 9 electric shavers
  • Doesn’t work well on thick facial hair
  • Head doesn’t pivot to shave contours of your face

Panasonic Arc 3 ES8103S

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B001DNE3KQ&Format= SL250 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=shaveandgroom 20

Panasonic’s electronics are usually really high quality and well-made, so I was excited to try out this electric shaver to see if it lives up to the brand’s reputation.

Although budget electric shavers aren’t necessarily made for getting close shaves, I believe this electric razor will get you as close as you can get without using a traditional razor. It does its job without nicking or cutting your skin. My girlfriend has also stolen this shaver on occasion and says it works great for her as well.

I’ll say for a foil shaver, this Panasonic works well. I found that I had reasonable control over the shaver, and it worked well on my coarse beard as well because the blades are faster and more powerful than some others on the market (13,000 cuts per minute).

Pros:

  • Can shave wet or dry
  • Comes with a pop-up trimmer for mustaches and sideburns
  • LCD shows you the battery power
  • Foil can be removed for easy cleaning
  • Head pivots to help shave the contours of your face
  • Razor moves super fast so you can get a quick shave
  • Charges very quickly and the charge lasts a long time
  • Great value

Cons:

  • Can cause some irritation in particularly sensitive spots on your neck
  • Trimmer is made of plastic so it may not hold up over a long time

Remington F5-5800

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B00BB5YHEI&Format= SL250 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=shaveandgroom 20

Remington probably isn’t a brand that you hear much about when you’re looking for men’s grooming products, but this electric shaver turned out to be worth looking into.

As far as price goes, this Remington electric shaver is one of the cheapest out there while still doing a decent job of shaving. One of the downsides of using an electric shaver is that you don’t get as close of a shave, and that can be frustrating.

A nice feature that this shaver has is what Remington calls “intercept shaving technology,” which helps pre-trim longer hairs before you put the foil shaver to your face to trim the rest of your hair. The foil is also able to pivot around the contours of your face so you can keep close contact with your jawline and chin.

Pros:

  • Comes with a pop-up trimmer
  • The battery lasts a very long time
  • Easy to wash
  • Can be used while charging
  • LED battery gauge shows the power
  • Razor refills are cheaper than other brands
  • Very minimal razor burn if any

Cons:

  • Charging time is 2 hours which is a little longer than some other shavers
  • Warranty is not the best
  • Foil screen is not very high-quality
  • May not be the best for sensitive skin

Philips Norelco 3500

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B0842YHKL3&Format= SL250 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=shaveandgroom 20

How many of us have been yelled at by your partner or roommate for leaving little hairs on the bathroom counter after shaving? Part of the allure of an electric shaver is that it saves time, and if you’re in a rush, you might not have time to clean up afterward.

A standout feature of the Philips Norelco 3500 is that the shaver head collects hair to reduce the amount that you’re leaving behind in the sink. Let’s be real, no one wants to see that, so why not get an electric shaver that helps you clean up after yourself.

Pros:

  • Wet or dry shaving
  • Easy to wash
  • Rotary shavers pivot in 5 directions to help shave the contours of your face
  • The battery takes 1 hour to charge fully
  • A full charge will give you 60 minutes of use
  • Comes with a pop-up trimmer for sideburns and mustache
  • Shaver head collects hair which can be opened and rinsed out
  • Comes with a travel pouch
  • Doesn’t irritate the skin

Cons:

  • Only operates in cordless mode (can’t charge it and use it at the same time)
  • Doesn’t give you a super close shave
  • The blade speed is not as fast as some other electric shavers

Final Thoughts

As I was trying to decide on a clear winner of this roundup, I thought it was important to mention that as long as you have realistic expectations for your electric shaver, you won’t be very disappointed with any of the shavers I’ve reviewed.

However, after some consideration of which shaver worked best for my specific hair type, and because I’m writing for those of you who have similar needs, I had to declare that the Panasonic Arc 3 ES2508103S was my favorite.

This Panasonic electric shaver does an excellent job on coarse hair because it’s a lot faster and more powerful than other electric shavers. It also does a great job of getting you a close shave, relative to other electric shavers.

It’s also easy to clean, has a super long battery life, and doesn’t take forever to get charged in the first place. Everyone’s tastes are different, so you’ll have to decide for yourself, but in my opinion, the Panasonic Arc 3 is a great choice.
